One by One: Target COVID-19 campaign raises $US 4 million through Smile 4 Humanity in support of Africa CDC’s PACT initiative
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, New York, USA, 3 August 2020
Through the Smile 4 Humanity Foundation, the One by One: Target COVID-19 Campaign has been able to raise a total of $4 million to support Africa CDC’s Partnership to Accelerate COVID-19 Testing (PACT) initiative, which aims to strengthen testing and PPE capacity for COVID-19 across Africa, with emphasis on countries that have only minimal capacity. Smile 4 Humanity has made a 3:1 match by committing US$ 3 million to Africa CDC’s US$ 1 million commitment towards the purchase of COVID-19 rapid antibody test kits and medical-grade masks for healthcare professionals.
“This donation from Smile 4 Humanity through the One by One: Target COVID-19 campaign is an incredible investment in the strong testing response we need across African nations, and will help the Africa CDC scale up health system strengthening efforts. Multi-sectoral partnerships and collaboration at the community, national, and in this case, global level, is the only way we can adequately respond to this pandemic.”- Dr. John Nkengasong, Director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
All FDA-approved material purchases are being made through accredited distributors, and the campaign will oversee the procurement cycle for a total of 307,000 Autobio Anti-SARS-CoV2 Rapid Tests and 3 million surgical masks to be sent to the Africa CDC over the course of the next few weeks.
“We thank the Africa CDC team for their cooperation, and we are honored to support Africa CDC’s COVID-19 Continental response strategy through our PPE subsidization program ensuring that vulnerable countries receive the critical PPE and testing they need. Shortage of critical medical supplies & resources are the biggest challenges in Africa’s COVID-19 response, and we aim to continue supporting the Africa CDC’s COVID-19 response following this first round of donations. - Cosmin Scortea , Chairman of the Smile 4 Humanity Foundation.
To date, the Africa CDC has facilitated over 3 million tests and deployed over 200 health workers across AU member states to combat the virus. With a population of over 1 billion people, testing is still in short supply. Widespread testing is essential in order to properly test, trace, and isolate cases and treat those infected to reduce cases across the continent and allow states to reopen their economies safely. The One by One: Target COVID-19 campaign aims to use this first round of investment to catalyze further action from the private sector in order to meet Africa CDC’s testing goal of 8000 tests per million population.
“As governments transition resources to fighting COVID-19, especially in developing countries, it has become clear that fighting this pandemic will require a beyond government approach. Strong cooperation among all actors, especially the private sector, to step up and rise to the challenge during this critical time is extremely crucial to ensure that Africa is able to manage this crisis. We thank the Smile 4 Humanity foundation for stepping up to the plate and hope this donation catalyzes further private
sector support for the COVID-19 fund” Strive Masiyiwa, African Union Special Envoy for mobilizing the private sector response to the COVID-19 pandemic
The One by One: Target COVID-19 campaign was launched as a sub-campaign of the One by One: Target 2030 Campaign by the Africa CDC, the African Union, the Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete Foundation and The Access Challenge to mobilize resources for Africa CDC’s PACT initiative and promote universal access of COVID-19 testing and PPE across the continent. The campaign pairs this resource mobilization with strategic communications and a mass media campaign to disseminate accurate public health information through prominent media houses, celebrities, and influencers to galvanize individual action against COVID-19 by drawing attention to the need for widespread testing and social prevention measures. The campaign invites global donors and partners to join the One by One: Target COVID-19 campaign in support of Africa CDC’s COVID-19 Response across the continent.
