private sector JOINs FORCES WITH the one by one campaign  to raise $4 million in support of the africa cdc’s pact initiative

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, New York, USA, 20th October, 2020: The One by One: Target COVID-19 Campaign has been able to raise a total of $4 million to support Africa CDC’s Partnership to Accelerate COVID-19 Testing (PACT) initiative, which aims to strengthen testing and PPE capacity for COVID-19 across Africa. Smile 4 Humanity has made a 3:1 match by committing US$ 3 million to a $1 million donation, which was raised through the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and other private sector partners towards the purchase of COVID-19 rapid antibody test kits and medical-grade masks for healthcare professionals.

“This donation from Smile 4 Humanity Foundation Germany, Michael & Susan Dell Foundation,  and BYKA Sustainability Group, Canada along with Angelworld Biotech, UAE through the One by One: Target COVID-19 campaign is an incredible investment in the strong testing response we need across African nations.  This investment will help the Africa CDC scale up COVID surveillance. Multi-sectoral partnerships like this one are the only way we can adequately respond to this pandemic.”

- Dr. John Nkengasong, Director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

All FDA-approved material purchases are being made through accredited distributors.  The campaign will oversee the procurement cycle for a total of 350,000 Angelworld Biotech Anti-SARS-CoV2 Rapid Test Kits which will be sent to the Africa CDC this week.

“We would like to thank the One By One Campaign and the Africa CDC team for their incredible cooperation.   We also thank our partner BYKA Sustainability Group along with Angelworld Biotech, UAE for their support. We are excited by private sector joining our donation program” said Rajendra Chaudhari, Vice President of the Smile4Humanity Foundation

“We are honored to support Africa CDC’s COVID-19 Continental Response strategy through our PPE subsidization program ensuring that vulnerable countries receive the critical PPE and testing they need. Shortage of critical medical supplies & resources are the biggest challenges in Africa’s COVID-19 response.  We aim to continue supporting the Africa CDC’s COVID-19 response following this first round of donations.”

 - Cosmin Scortea , Chairman of the Smile 4 Humanity Foundation.

To date, the Africa CDC has distributed over 3 million tests and deployed over 200 health workers across AU member states to combat the COVID virus. With a population of over 1 billion people, testing is still in short supply. Widespread testing is essential in order to properly test, trace, and isolate cases and treat those infected to reduce cases across the continent and allow states to reopen their economies safely.

The One by One: Target COVID-19 campaign aims to use this first round of investment to catalyze further action from the private sector in order to meet Africa CDC’s testing goal of 8000 tests per million population.

The One by One: Target COVID-19 campaign was launched as a sub-campaign of the One by One: Target 2030 Campaign by the Africa CDC, the African Union, the Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete Foundation and The Access Challenge to mobilize resources for Africa CDC’s PACT initiative and to promote universal access of COVID-19 testing and PPE across the continent. The campaign pairs this resource mobilization with strategic communications and a mass media campaign to disseminate accurate public health information through prominent media houses, celebrities, and influencers to galvanize individual action against COVID-19.

The campaign invites global donors and partners to join the One by One: Target COVID-19 campaign in support of Africa CDC’s COVID-19 Response across the continent.
